Headquarters
  DETAILS   The Latvian Physiotherapy Association has no headquarter location and two staff employees or employed managing director. The association holds monthly executive meetings and furthers liasions with other health care professions and authorities. The association does not hold membership in any trade union.

Physiotherapy Education
  INFORMATION AND NUMBERS   The Latvian association does not have an education department. There are 2 physiotherapy schools in the country with approx. 50 students per year. The eduction takes 4 years (4.300 hrs) and result in an academic degree/diploma. Studies allow for postgraduate education. Physiotherapists are involved in both teaching and research. Latvia has recognition of physiotherapy specialists.

Status of profession
  TITLE AND REGULATIONS ON THE PROFESSION   Professional Title/ Qualification: Physiotherapist (Bachelor degree) Legal protection of the title and activity of physiotherapists has been established and they have founded rules of professional conduct for physiotherapists. Whether physiotherapist members must be registered and obtain a licence to practice physiotherapy has not been specified by the Latvian association. Latvia has established a code of ethics for physiotherapists. The "Welfare Ministry" is responsible for the physiotherapy profession in Latvia. There are sufficient employment opportunities for physiotherapists in the country.

Practice of physiotherapy
  INSURANCE AND PRACTICE REGULATIONS   The physiotherapy services in Latvia are determined by the profession. The physiotherapist determines the clinical intervention of physiotherapy him/herself. Latvia offers mainly public but also private physiotherapy services. The insurance cover for physiotherapy is to 90% paid through the national health care system and to 10% privately the patient.

Twinning
  The Latvia Association had a twinning program with Denmark during 1995 - 1999. Latvia estimates the total cost of the twinning program to 30.000 Euro. No governmental or EU funding was obtained. Because the twinning with Denmark is no longer active, the Latvian association herewith announces its wish to establish new twinning connections.
